After major criticism of Maslow’s theory of
motivation the Herzberg’s Theory of Motivation or Tow factors Theory of
Motivation is developed by Proff, Frederick Herzberg which has also received
great appreciation. In fact, Herzberg was out and out a great psychologist of
this world hence, in 1959 he published his dream book – The Motivation to Work.
Before publishing the book he was given more time in searching the factors in
employee’s work-environment which caused satisfaction or dissatisfaction to
them. Thus, Herzberg held an interview to know the ins and outs of these
factors, in which employees are called and asked what pleased and displeased
them about their work-environment. In the long run, he found that the factors
causing job satisfaction were totally different from that causing job
dissatisfaction.
After that Herzberg developed motivation hygiene theory to explain these results. He called satisfiers factor as a motivator and dissatisfiers as hygiene factors. Here term ‘Hygiene’ used as maintenance factors which needs modifications for satisfactions.
The following table presents the top six factors causing satisfaction and dissatisfaction against the jobs listed in the order of higher to lower importance:-
