Herberg’s Theory of Motivation

After major criticism of Maslow’s theory of motivation the Herzberg’s Theory of Motivation or Tow factors Theory of Motivation is developed by Proff, Frederick Herzberg which has also received great appreciation. In fact, Herzberg was out and out a great psychologist of this world hence, in 1959 he published his dream book –  The Motivation to Work. Before publishing the book he was given more time in searching the factors in employee’s work-environment which caused satisfaction or dissatisfaction to them. Thus, Herzberg held an interview to know the ins and outs of these factors, in which employees are called and asked what pleased and displeased them about their work-environment. In the long run, he found that the factors causing job satisfaction were totally different from that causing job dissatisfaction.
After that Herzberg developed motivation hygiene theory to explain these results. He called satisfiers factor as a motivator and dissatisfiers as hygiene factors. Here term ‘Hygiene’ used as maintenance factors which needs modifications for satisfactions.
